Lostwinds Art

I know, I know, it's been a while, but look - I brought goodies!

Here's some art from a game that I was fortunate enough to work on in 2009 - Lostwinds: Winter of the Melodias.

It really was a dream project for me, getting to work with a small, talented team of people, on a project that really inspired us. I think a lot of that passion came through in the end result - the game went straight to the top of the Wiiware charts when it released, and we scored 9's out of 10 from a lot of reviewers.

It's an awesome feeling knowing that your efforts paid off, and that people are enjoying your work, but you can also recognise that there's still room for improvement...

Anyhow, enough blab, here's the art - three pieces of concept art that I did during production, as well as a piece of promotional artwork. (Thanks to Frontier Developments for giving me permission to post these.)

Third time's a...

So, the dust has settled (more or less); i'm now living in Cambridge, and for the past three months, i've been working at Frontier Developments (the guys who made LostWinds for the Wii).

The project i'm on is a lot of fun - but it'll be a while before I can show any work from it. So in the meantime, here's some more personal stuff:

So...anyone keeping up with the games industry news will know that Free Radical went into administration last Christmas - I was one of those made redundant (which means i'm now two for two as far as companies go..!).

I was there for almost three years, and had the pleasure of working with some of the finest guys i've ever met - the Free Radical character art department. I'm not really sure how to do them justice: Imagine a group of people who are developing themselves artistically with such force that you can't help but be swept up along with them, who can make your sides split with laughter on a daily basis, and who make you glad to get up in the morning and go to work. That's them.

So here's another batch, including some work done for the Timesplitters 4 project.

Daily Speedpaints...

I had a great time at Headfirst; it was far from perfect, but I got to work with some really fun, talented guys on a project that was very interesting from a creative standpoint. We researched Georgian architecture and experimented with fusing it with Lovecraftian shapes and motifs, and spent a lot of time developing the look of the project as a whole - it was my first experience with actual production design.

So after the demise of Headfirst, I went to work at Free Radical Design, where I joined in with a daily speedpainting group:

Call of Cthulhu...

Here's some concept art/3d work from my time at Headfirst Productions, when I worked on a follow-up to the game Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth - it was called 'Tainted Legacy', and would have been a great game, i'm sure, if Headfirst hadn't gone belly-up. Seriously, it had tentacles, deep ones, giant fish women, these big crab things...

Did I mention the tentacles?
